Actually, Carlos is going to check the outlet first. I want him to double-check his work—he can handle most things, but if it was wired incorrectly, we should fix it now so we don’t end up paying twice for the same job. If the outlet still tests bad after Carlos checks it with the tool I sent, then we’ll bring the electrician out. Carlos said he’ll be there tomorrow at 10 AM.

So I figured out what the problem was. It was the outlet itself, not the equipment. The Cox guy told me nothing should ever get that hot unless it was a faulty outlet or faulty equipment. When I came home from the Cox store and plugged in my new modem, the same exact thing happened. It got scorching hot after an hour or two, and the red light started flashing. Fortunately the gear still works after I plugged it into a different outlet. And it's no longer overheating, so the outlet over the shelf must have faulty wiring.
